MBE/DBE/ACDBE/SBE Application Assistance Workshop
Learn the benefits of certification, the application process and eligibility standards as well as business development and marketing tips from MDOT's Office of MInority Business Enterprise-the State's Official Certification Agency. You will also have the opportunity to meet with a certification expert one-on-one and ask questions that relate specifically to your business.
Introduction to Understanding the Patent Process
This workshop is the introduction to the inventions and intellectual property institute, a five-session series of workshops designed to guide inventors and potential investors along the journey from idea to marketable product. at the completion of the inventions and intellectual property institute, participants will understand the general principles and process of becoming an inventor, know the pitfalls that potential inventors face and how to avoid them, develop a keen know-how regarding improving existing patents or products, learn what it takes to protect your ideas, learn the next steps leading from idea to invention.
How to Set Up Your Accounting System (QuickBooks Pro)
Hands-on computer-based training to obtain a basic understanding of the QuickBooks accounting software and gain important insights on proper set-up, key functionality tools, and important management reports for your business.
MS Office Training (Word, Excel & PowerPoint)
Introduction to Microsoft Word
Become familiar with the basic Microsoft Word features. Learn the fundamentals, documents basics, working with and editing text, and formatting characters, paragraphs and pages. Prerequisite: Students should be familiar with using personal computers and have used a mouse and keyboard. Students should bring in a USB-compatible flash drive (to store in-class work) to all sessions.
Introduction to Microsoft Excel
This course introduces the basic features of Microsoft Excel. Students will create worksheets and enter and edit text, values, formulas, and pictures. Become familiar with basic formatting techniques and functions. Learn how to us the hep system and navigate worksheets and workbooks. Prerequisite: Students should be familiar with using personal computers and have use a mouse and keyboard. Students should bring a USB-compatible flash drive (to store in-class work) to all sessions.
Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint
This course covers the introductory functions of Microsoft PowerPoint presentation software. Create and modify presentation slides that combine text, clip art drawings, tables, charts, and graphs. Learn to run a basic PowerPoint presentation. Prerequisite: Students should be familiar with using personal computers and have use a mouse and keyboard. Students should bring a USB-compatible flash drive (to store in-class work) to all sessions.
How to Write a Successful Business Plan
This is a six week course that will teach you how to write your business plan.
The Path to Homeownership Workshop
This workshop will help prepare you for the largest and most important purchases you will make for you and your family. Learn what it takes to become a homeowner. Increase your knowledge of Federal and State programs you may qualify for and various financing options available in today's real estate market.
Introduction to Learning about Entrepreneurship and Small Businesses
This workshop is for anyone starting a business or having recently started one. The goal is to alert individuals to the major factors they must consider when deciding whether to start a business. Topics: management skills sets needed to become a successful owner, how to evaluate your own business skills, success traits for business leadership, advantages and barriers to owning your own business, risks associated with business ownership, legal requirements, business planning, finding money, and spiritual/ethical dilemma.
Preparing for Tax Filing Season
This class will give you an understanding of your Income Tax Return as required by the IRS and how to be prepared for it. You will understand what you can/cannot claim on your return and how to maximize your refund.
Budgeting 101 Training
This class is designed for people that are new to budgeting. In this class you will learn when and where to start, how to organize your spending, and how to prioritize all of the items in your new budget.
Most classes take place at the Reid Community Development Business Center. Selected workshops will be offered at other locations in Oxon Hill, Suitland, and Riverdale.
